 TERMS OF REFERENCE (TOR)
UNBC Research Excellence Awards

Definition:
The Board of Governors of UNBC approved the creation of four Research Excellence Awards (two from the College of Arts, Social and Health Sciences, two from the College of Science and Management) per year to be awarded to Faculty/SLIs at the convocation in May. Those eligible to
receive such awards are faculty members holding Tenured, Tenure-Track, Senior Laboratory Instructor or Regular Term Appointments, including those affiliated with the Northern Medical Program. These awards are intended for those individuals who do not hold appointments in which their research
accomplishments and responsibilities are specifically recognized, i.e. those who currently hold Canada Research Chairs, Endowed Chairs, Leadership Chairs, Research Scientists, etc., are not eligible to be nominated. Recipients of the Research Excellence Awards will receive a plaque and a $2500.00 cash award.Recipients of the Research Excellence Award are not eligible to be nominated again for a three-year period after receiving the award. Previous years’ award winners are listed at http://www.unbc.ca/assets/research/unbc_research_excellence_award_winners.pdf.

Process:
A Call for Nominations for the Research Excellence Awards will be distributed to the university community by the Office of Research and Graduate Programs. Program Chairs may nominate a maximum of two candidates from their Program; Deans may nominate a maximum of two Program
Chairs (or Senior Laboratory Instructors not appointed to a Program). The nominees must agree to be nominated. Nominations should briefly outline (in a maximum of one page) the reasons why the nominee is worthy of this award and must be accompanied by an up-to-date C.V. of the nominees. The original documents of the nomination must be submitted to the Office of Research and Graduate Programs by the declared deadline. An adjudicating committee will be made up annually of the previous year’s award recipients and/or elected representatives (3 from each college) for a total of 6. The Chair of this committee will be the Vice-President of the Office of Research and Graduate Programs. The adjudicating committee will meet to determine the names of the successful nominees no later than the last Friday in April to allow sufficient time to notify the successful faculty members and prepare for distribution of the awards at the annual convocation.

Evaluation Criteria:
The committee will evaluate candidate using the following criteria:
• Relevant research activities to communicate and demonstrate their research (workshops, conferences, etc.)
• External grants
• The stage of the researcher’s career (i.e., early in their career or established faculty) will be considered
• Ability to inspire undergraduate/graduate/post-doctoral students towards research excellence
• Quantity and quality of peer-reviewed publications (i.e. number, type, number of citations, etc.) The Adjudicating Committee for the UNBC Research Excellence Awards will utilize their sound judgment in applying the above criteria when evaluating the nominations. The recipients of these awards will reflect the research diversity of the UNBC community and will be encouraged to act as ambassadors for the institution.
