UNBC 8TH ANNUAL TEACHING AND LEARNING CONFERENCE
September 1st and 2nd, 2010
Teaching in the Digital Age
CALL FOR PANELS/WORKSHOPS AND PAPERS
The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology would like to invite panel/workshop proposals for 1.5-hour and 3-hour workshops focusing on the conference theme: "Teaching in the Digital Age.”
Submission Deadline: July 15th, 2010
Twitter, Facebook, on-line journals and up-to-the-minute news and social networking groups have changed the nature of communication. Our students have, as Don Tapscott argues, “Grown Up Digital.” Teaching students in the digital age requires a new way of thinking about the way students access and use information. This conference seeks to explore creative ways of engaging students who live and work in a digital world. We do not aim to lament the digital world but rather to find ways to harness the possibilities of technology while at the same time teaching and promoting scholarship. For many of us technology is just like a piece of chalk, a tool for teaching. So, how do we balance the needs of the “digital student” with the needs of scholarship? We are seeking proposals for workshops that address any aspect of the conference theme and that model the principles of "active learning."
Topics might include:
•
What is the profile of a net generation student?
•
Who are our students and how do we teach them?
•
The issue of ethics and the use of technology
•
Support services available to students
•
Assistive and Adaptive Technology
•
Preparing your documents for the digital world
•
The Pedagogy of Teleconference
•
“I Can’t Do That” – Overcoming faculty resistance to technology
•
Teaching With Wikipedia
•
Cloud Computing
•
Alternatives to Blackboard
•
The Digitized Library
•
Laptops in the Post-secondary classroom
•
Using Technology to reduce distance
The Workshop Proposal should
•
be a maximum of 300 words and should explain the key concepts and/or aims of the workshop;
•
explain how the workshop is relevant to the conference theme;
•
indicate how the workshop models "active learning" (e.g., through exercises, discussion, group brainstorming and so on);
•
identify any technical support/extra materials your workshop would require.
The Paper Proposal should
•
be a maximum of 300 words and explain the thesis and subject of the paper
•
explain how the paper is relevant to the conference theme
•
identify any technical support/extra materials required for the presentation
•
indicate if you would like the paper considered for the proceedings
•
Please send your proposals to Tracy Summerville at summervi@unbc.ca by July 15th, 2010. Please write: T&L Proposal in the subject line. Your email should include your contact information and a short biography. Please clearly indicate whether your proposal is for a workshop or a formal paper and, if the latter, whether you would like it considered for publication in the proceedings.
All proposals will be reviewed by the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology Conference Organizing Committee.
If you have any questions or would like to suggest workshop topics you would like to see, feel free to contact Tracy Summerville summervi@unbc.ca Heather Smith smith@unbc.ca or Bill Owen owenw@unbc.ca
Conference Proceedings: Participants will be asked to submit summaries or elaborations of their workshops to post to the conference website.
