The National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) is pleased to announce our 2010 national conference, “Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow”. It will take place in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the Delta Hotel from November 12-14. The conference will focus on solutions to drive change in accessible education and employment for students with disabilities.
This year’s event will be an exciting opportunity for students, consumer advocates, service providers, employers and all others interested in exploring key issues of equal access to post secondary education and employment for students and graduates with disabilities. The fully bilingual conference welcomes delegates from across Canada and around the world!

Background Information
The iCON (interCultural Online Health Network) Project is an initiative of the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s eHealth Strategy Office that engages and promotes communication between community members and health professionals in Lower Mainland through culturally-relevant patient-centered health education materials created and distributed in a number of languages for prevention and management of prevalent chronic diseases.
Building on iCON’s success and momentum from recent community engagement activities, our Office supported by the Public Health Agency of Canada, the BC Ministry of Health, the Health Authorities of BC, the Irving K. Barber Centre at UBC, Safeway Pharmacy and the UBC Department of Medicine is hosting a public diabetes education forum for members of Chinese community by videoconference in Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna and Prince George on Saturday, June 5th, 2010.
Volunteer Information:
Position Title: Volunteer Research Assistant
Job Description:
The eHealth Strategy Office is looking for student volunteers to assist in a variety of activities at iCON’s upcoming “Chinese Diabetes Health Forum: Join Your Community in the Quest for Better Health” event on Saturday, June 5th. At this forum, you will be actively engaged with patients and members of the Chinese community at Prince George site.
We want YOU to help us:
- Confirm the registration of attendees as they arrive
- Recruit forum attendees to complete feedback surveys
- Assist in survey data collection
- Assist with question and answer session
- Interact with patients and members of the Chinese community
Incentives for participation:
- A certificate and personalized letter of recognition detailing the total number hours spent volunteering
Commitment:
A total of 6.0 hours:
- Attend the research training session on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 from 12:00PM – 1:30PM in preparation for the forum (1.5 hours); and
- Attend the forum on Saturday, June 5th, 2010 from 12:30PM – 5:00PM (4.5hours).
The Research Training Session on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 from 12:00PM – 1:30PM is mandatory as we will be going over important details about the day and the research activities you will be involved in. This session will be hosted by videoconference; the location is TBD.
If you are interested in volunteering, but are unable to make it to the training, please let us know immediately so that we may work out an alternative plan.
Volunteers will be required to be at the forum on Saturday, June 5th, 2010 from 12:30PM – 5:00PM.
Requirements & Qualifications:
Student volunteers need to have:
- Ability to understand and speak Mandarin and/or Cantonese
and/or
- Ability to read and/or type Mandarin and/or Cantonese
All volunteers will receive a letter detailing their contributions and certificate of recognition for their participation.
Further, if you know of anyone who speaks/understands and/or reads/writes Cantonese that may be interested in volunteering at any of the forum locations (Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna and Prince George) – please let us know!
